Skin Care Routine Steps: The Right Order for Cleaner, Better Results

You’ve found products you love and you’re staying consistent with your routine, but your skin still isn’t quite feeling the way you hoped? Before changing up your entire skincare shelf, it’s worth taking a look at the order you’re applying your products in. The right products, applied in the right order, can help your routine work harder - allowing each step to absorb properly and support your skin the way it’s intended to.

The good news? Getting your skincare order right is one of the simplest changes you can make, and it doesn’t require adding more products. From your morning essentials to your evening ritual, we’re breaking down exactly where each step belongs - including the two steps that often cause the most confusion: eye cream and facial oil - and how a low-tox approach can help you create a routine that feels simple, effective and intentional.

Why the Order of Your Skincare Routine Matters

Your skin absorbs product in layers, and heavier formulas can physically stop lighter ones from getting through. A rich moisturiser applied before your serum sits on top like a barrier, so the serum never really gets a chance to do anything. Oils work the same way - they're excellent at sealing things in, but applied too early they block whatever's meant to absorb after them. The most common mistake we see is SPF going on under moisturiser instead of last, which dilutes it and reduces how well it protects you. A small adjustment, but it makes a real difference.

Morning Skin Care Routine Steps

  1. Cleanser - Clears overnight buildup so everything that follows can actually absorb. Look for something low-tox that gently cleans without stripping your skin, like our Milky Cleanser

  2. Serum - Your most concentrated step, so it goes onto clean, dry skin first. The Firming Serum is clinically backed and low-tox, a solid choice for visible results without harsh actives.

  3. Eye cream - The skin here is thinner and needs its own formula. Bright & Tight Under Eye Cream goes on straight after your serum, for puffiness and dark circles.

  4. Moisturiser -  Locks in everything underneath and keeps your skin comfortable through the day. A clean formula should hydrate without sitting heavily under makeup, our Daily Moisturiser is a great choice for gentle hydration.

  5. SPF - Always last. It needs to sit undiluted on top of your skin to actually do its job.

Night Skin Care Routine Steps

  1. Double cleanse - If you've had makeup or SPF on, this breaks it down so your regular cleanser can do its job properly.

  2. Serum - Your skin does most of its repair work overnight, so this is when actives are most effective. The Firming Serum works just as well here, applied straight onto clean skin.

  3. Eye cream - Same principle as the morning: Bright & Tight Under Eye Cream before anything heavier.

  4. Facial oil - The Glow Oil seals in everything you've just applied, so skin looks plumper and more refreshed by morning.

  5. Moisturiser - Your final step to seal in the benefits of your skincare routine, leaving your skin feeling nourished, hydrated and refreshed by morning.

Where a Facial Oil Fits in Your Skincare Regime

Facial oil placement can be a little tricky, but the rule is simple: oils work best after your water-based skincare steps (like serums and eye creams), once your skin has had a chance to absorb all those beautiful ingredients. Think of facial oil as a finishing touch to your routine - helping to lock in hydration and create a nourishing layer that supports your skin barrier. Apply a thin layer before SPF in your morning routine, or use it as your second-last step at night, before moisturiser.

While facial oils and moisturisers are often used together, they each have an important role to play. Your moisturiser helps hydrate and nourish your skin, while facial oil helps seal in all that goodness for a healthy, glowing finish. We love combining our Glow Oil with our Daily Moisturiser for the ultimate hydration duo. When choosing a facial oil, a simple ingredient list with nourishing, plant-based ingredients is always a good sign. Our Glow Oil is vegan, cruelty-free, made in Australia and designed to leave your skin looking radiant and feeling deeply cared for.

The Eye Area: The Step Most Routines Get Wrong

The skin around your eyes is delicate and often one of the first areas to show signs of tiredness, dryness or ageing, which is why it deserves a little extra love in your routine. Eye creams are designed specifically to target concerns like puffiness, dark circles and fine lines, helping to nourish and support this sensitive area. Apply your eye cream after your serum and before moisturiser, gently tapping it in with your ring finger rather than rubbing. If lash or brow serums are part of your routine, apply these after your eye cream, focusing directly along the lash line or through the brows rather than across the entire eye area. Our Bright & Tight Under Eye Cream is your go-to for a firming and brightening boost, with our Lash Serum and Brow Serum as simple additions if you’re looking to support fuller-looking lashes or brows.

Building a Low-Tox Skincare Routine That Actually Works

A low-tox skincare routine isn’t about having more products - it’s about choosing the right ones for your skin and being intentional about what you’re using every day. A few simple principles can make all the difference: fewer, thoughtfully formulated products can often deliver better results than a routine filled with unnecessary steps; look for formulas that combine effective ingredients with a focus on skin health; and where possible, choose products made with your skin, lifestyle and environment in mind. This is the philosophy Xali Organics was built on - creating clinically backed, low-tox, vegan and cruelty-free skincare that helps you feel confident in every product you use. What to Do Next: Build Your Routine

A great skincare routine comes down to two things: choosing the right products and applying them in the right order. Remember the basics - thin to thick, water-based products before oils, and SPF as the final step in your morning routine. To start building your routine, begin with the Firming Serum for your AM and PM serum step, Bright & Tight Under Eye Cream to care for the delicate eye area, and Glow Oil to lock in hydration and leave your skin feeling nourished overnight. From there, you can explore the full Xali range and create a routine that works beautifully for your skin.

FAQs

What is the correct order for a skincare routine?

It's good to work out what routine and steps work best for you. For example, you might want to skip your morning cleanser if you feel once a day is enough for your skin. As a general rule though, a good morning routine would consist of cleanser, serum, eye cream, moisturiser, then SPF. At night, this routine might look more like cleanser, serum, eye cream, facial oil, then moisturiser. The general rule is thinnest to thickest, water-based before oil-based.

Does skincare routine order really matter?

Yes and more so than you’d think. By applying products out of order, you can stop them from working as effectively. A good example of this would be putting facial oil on before your serums, effectively forming a barrier that blocks the serum's actives from absorbing, in addition to your other products.

When do you apply facial oil in your skincare routine?

At night, oil goes after serum and eye cream, just before moisturiser, to help lock everything in while you sleep. In the morning, it's optional - a very thin layer applied before SPF. We also recommend mixing the glow oil with the daily moisturiser for an extra hydrating, glowy moisture rich combination.

What is the difference between a skincare routine and a skincare regime?

These terms are used pretty interchangeably. Both simply refer to the set of products you apply, in order, as part of your skin care.

How many skincare steps do you really need?

At a minimum, cleanser, moisturiser and SPF in the morning will cover the basics. Most people see the best results with around four to six targeted steps - more isn't always better, it just needs to be the right ones for you and your skin type.
